SYNOPSIS
Falls are a major cause of
increased morbidity and mortality among the elderly. It results in fractures,
hospitalisation which leads to decreased quality of life and increased cost of
care.
There is a risk of falls in
elderly populations who have cognitive impairments such as dementia. Other risk factors include acute illness,
alcohol and substance abuse, altered gait or balance, communication difficulties,
depression, poly-pharmacy, poor diet and poor eyesight.
Exercise, managing the
environment, reviewing medication can help reduce the risk of falls.
The evidence for reducing risk
of falls and fractures include sufficient vitamin D uptake (strong evidence),
exercise (moderate evidence), better supervision, review medication and
treatment of depression.
